The Lut Desert in Iran is among the hottest areas on the planet. In five out of seven years (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009), the highest surface temperature on Earth was found here. The single highest recorded in any year, in any region, occurred in 2005, and was 70.7°C (159.3°F). The presence of dry, rocky and dark-coloured lands leads to high temperatures.
