The general reddish colour of Mars’ surface is due to oxidised iron in the rocks and sands present all over. Mars has polar caps, similar to Earth, but they are composed of carbon dioxide ice, instead of water ice. Mars’ days are only slightly longer than Earth’s. The inclination of its axis, also similar to Earth’s, results in seasons. A martian years lasts 689 Earth days.
