Planet Mercury is the terrestrial planet closest to the Sun. Because of that, it is hard to observe well from Earth. This image is taken from space by the Messenger mission. Because it has no significant protecting atmosphere, Mercury’s surface is filled with craters, left by impacts from external bodies.
