This animation of the rotating Sun is created from images taken by the SOHO mission’s Michelson Doppler Imager between November 2000 and April 2001. The Sun rotates in about 25 days around its axis at the equator, somewhat slower at the poles. We see the photosphere of the Sun at a temperature of about 5500 ºC (9932 ºF). The black sun spots are areas of somewhat lower temperature, about 3500 ºC (6332 ºF).
